Events and Matsuri

Kawagoshi Matsuri

This matsuri is held year-round in the river leading down to Harajiri waterfalls. A group of men from Bungo on usually carry a Mikoshi, which houses a god, to bring him from its father temple to its mother temple in Ogata. These men carry this Mikoshi across a river and is quite a spectacle. This is usually held on New Year’s Day.

Date: November

There you can try over 30 different types of Japanese sake from 4 different breweries. Nihonshu, Shochu, Umeshu, and more are present while walking the quiet streets of Ogata.

Hyotan Matsuri

Wearing straw shoes, a unique robe, and a big Hyotan (which is a big clay cannister of gods sake) a religious representative from the city preforms a sacred walk to the temple as the main part of this matsuri. As he goes to pray at the temple, he will pour out all of god’s sake to each attendee. All the local sake and food places come to support and have people enjoy the city.

Towering mountains, beautiful canyons, cliffs and magnificent waterfalls. Bungo Ono is a place where various geological wonders can be seen and as the result of the Mt. Aso eruption that occurred 90,000 years ago. In such a unique land, we have grown rice and delicious vegetables, cultivated the most shiitake mushrooms in Japan, Buddha statues carved into cliffs, and traditional dancing called Kagura.
Six JR stations connect various parts of the city and five roadside stations are full of abundant agricultural products and local craftmanship.
We here at Sato no Tabi want to take your stay and turn it into an adventure.
Stop trying to understand Japan through the cities of today; come to the cities of yesterday and soak in the history that is Japan.
